Digital Format Help

Many of the titles in our bookshop are now available in a variety of eBook formats. You'll see the format in listing and search results pages, and on the book page a number of icons will indicate the various formats available.
If you need help on finding the right eBook format for you, here is a quick guide to making sure you get the one you want.

DRM Free ePub

Look for this button on our book pages:

ePub files can be read using a number of applications and devices including Apple iBooks (on the iPad or iPhone), Adobe Digital Editions and the Sony Reader. There are ePub readers available for all the major phone and tablet platforms.

DRM Free means that, unlike Amazon kindle, or iBooks files, there is no digital rights management on these files, so you're free to read them on as many devices as you like. For a full list of applications and devices see the Wikipedia page.

Not the same as PDFs!

ePubs are not the same as PDFs and cannot be read using PDF reader software. They do, however, have many advantages over PDFs as the text can be resized and reformatted to fit the screen size of the device they are being read on - plus they include detailed contents listings and are highly searchable.

How to read ePub files

1. Adobe Digital Editions
Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a FREE application that runs on Mac or PC and can be downloaded here
Once downloaded you should be able to double-click the ePub file to open in ADE or alternatively you can add a book from the Library menu within the application: Library > Add item to Library

2. iBooks on the iPhone, iPod and iPad
To read ePub files on your Apple device you need to first install the free iBooks app on your device and then add the ePub via syncing with iTunes. To add the Book to your iTunes library - select Books from the iTunes menu on the left and then File > Add to Library and select the ePub file you wish to add. When you next sync your device with iTunes the book should appear in the iBooks app.

3. Amazon kindle
You can view these DRM-free files on the kindle, although you will have to convert the file to a format that kindle accepts. You can read this article for details on how to do that. If that sounds like trouble, but you do want to read the title on your kindle, then you may also be able buy the file directly from Amazon via the link on our books page. (as detailed below)

Amazon kindle

Look for this button on our book pages:

You can buy a great many of our titles for your kindle directly from Amazon. You can also view these tiles on most smartphones, tablets or computers by downloading the reader software from Amazon - or by using their cloud reader through a web browser. Here are some links for the Kindle reader on a variety of platforms:

Apple iPhone / iPad

Look for this button on our book pages:

Many titles are available directly from Apple via the iBookstore. If you see the "Available on iBooks" button on one of our book pages, then you can click it to launch iTunes and view the book page from within iTunes, where you can purchase the title for your iOS device.
